What is the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?

There was a point where the lines were blurred and the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator were not clear. In short, an interior designer may also decorate but a decorator does not design. Decorators adorn space that already exists. This is the big difference.

In order to design for a client, there must be an understanding of the clients needs, behavior and how they function in their home, or place of business if you are a commercial designer. Space can be decorated and adorned with all of the most beautiful furnishings but if it isn't functional, it won't work. That is where an Interior Designer  comes in.  We not only beautify your surroundings, we "create" space. This takes skill as there are a lot of things to take in consideration. "Will this extra room meet building code?" "How can a two bedroom be redesigned for a family of three with a new baby on the way?" "How can we make this small kitchen enough space for mom, dad two growing boys and still have space for their friends sleepovers and the little ones occasional finger painting?" "How can we take care of this unfortunate foundation problem on our already established budget and still meet the clients wish list?" Interior Designers design and are project managers.  At the end of each project, it has to work - that is be pleasing to the eye, functional, make you fall in love with your space again, and be safe.
